Herbert Hendin, MD

Before coming to Suicide Prevention International (SPI), Dr. Herbert Hendin had been the founding director of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and served as its first president then becoming its executive director and subsequently its medical director and finally director of special projects. In 2006, with the help of scientists participating in those projects, he started Suicide Prevention International (SPI) which has a different approach to suicide prevention.

SPI uses an international network of scientists to decide which projects are most likely to have a direct impact in preventing suicide, selects the researchers it feels are most qualified to conduct them, works with them in developing the projects, and is a participant in implementing the projects from the beginning to the end. It concentrates on a smaller number of projects and is able to fund them more generously.

Before that Dr. Hendin had been the Executive Director of the Center for Psychosocial Studies which focused on psychiatric problems that had a social dimension ranging from substance abuse to posttraumatic stress among Vietnam veterans as well as suicide which he studied in different cultures and age groups. He became interested in the value of good psychological and medical care as a preventative to suicide in elderly patients who were seriously or terminally ill.
